Belgium's mobile network landscape is an evolving arena, with key players vying for dominance, but who comes out on top for the best deals?

Opensignal, an independent analysis company, has recently provided insights into the performance of the three major networks: Proximus, Orange, and Telenet/Base.

Belgium's mobile landscape comprises a mix of Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs). MNOs, such as Proximus, own their network infrastructures, while MVNOs lease infrastructure from MNOs. The overall network quality in Belgium is commendable, but there are variations, with each operator excelling in different aspects.

Download Speed

Proximus leads the pack with an impressive average download speed of 49.1 Mbps, outperforming Telenet/Base (42 Mbps) and Orange (33.8 Mbps). This marks a change from the joint position of Telenet/Base and Proximus in March 2023.

Upload Speed

Proximus also takes the lead in upload speed, with an average of 13 Mbps, followed by Telenet/Base (11.5 Mbps) and Orange (10.9 Mbps).

5G Performance

In the realm of 5G, Orange stands out with an average download speed of 240 Mbps, while Proximus and Telenet/Base closely follow with 167.1 and 167 Mbps, respectively. However, 5G coverage is crucial, and in this regard, Orange lags behind, offering the lowest 5G coverage in the country. Telenet/Base has a more extensive 5G network, with Proximus falling between the two. Keep in mind that coverage may vary by region, so consult the operators' interactive maps to determine the status in your area.

4G Remains Relevant

Despite the emergence of 5G, 4G remains the predominant mobile standard in Belgium. To assess coverage and signal strength, consult the website of BIPT, the national telecommunications regulator.

New Player Alert

A new contender, Digi, is entering the Belgian market after securing spectrum in 2022. In partnership with Belgian Citymesh, Digi will initially rely on the Proximus network to launch its services, with plans to acquire around 400 Proximus antenna sites. This move aims to introduce competition and potentially lower telecom prices in a market that has historically had some of the highest prices in Europe.

Proximus Dominates

Proximus emerges as the top-performing mobile network in Belgium, excelling in both Download and Upload Speed Experiences. Proximus users enjoy an average download speed of 49.1 Mbps, outpacing Telenet by 7.1 Mbps. Proximus also leads in the Upload Speed Experience, boasting a 1.5 Mbps advantage over Telenet.

Telenet Shines in 5G

Telenet takes the lead in 5G Availability, offering the most consistent 5G connection. Its users spend 7.9% of their time with an active 5G connection, edging past Proximus. Additionally, Telenet dominates the 5G Games Experience and 5G Voice App Experience, providing a superior gaming and voice app experience on 5G.

Orange Excels in 5G Download Speed

Orange stands out with an impressive 5G Download Speed, boasting a substantial lead over Proximus and Telenet. Orange's score of 240 Mbps surpasses its competitors by a significant margin.

Consistent Quality with Proximus

Proximus secures the Consistent Quality award with a score of 80.8%, indicating the most consistent user experience. This award assesses whether the network reliably supports common mobile applications, ensuring users can complete demanding tasks on their devices.

In conclusion, Proximus stands as the top choice for those seeking an overall fast and consistent mobile network experience in Belgium. Telenet leads in 5G availability and excels in mobile gaming and voice app experiences. Orange is the go-to option for those prioritizing 5G download speed.

As the Belgian mobile landscape continues to evolve, it's important to consider your specific needs, location, and priorities when choosing a mobile network provider. Explore the coverage maps provided by operators to determine which one best suits your requirements. Additionally, keep an eye on the upcoming entry of Digi, which may bring new competitive dynamics to the market.
