Great Rondella
The great rondelle of Buda Castle is a circular bastion on the southern slope of Castle Hill in Buda, a reconstructed part of the former fortifications of the Buda Castle. It was restored in the 1950s by excavating, conserving and partially completing its medieval walls. Together with its added gate tower and the adjacent Buzogánytorony, it has been part of the Buda skyline ever since. The rondella is the southernmost tip of the castle. Its 5 m thick walls have 7 gun emplacements, accompanied by a covered defensive corridor built during the restoration. From the outside, access to the rondelle used to be provided and prevented by a drawbridge. The gate tower must have been built shortly after the rondelle and its restoration dates from the same period as the bastion. Its foundation walls and part of the side walls are original.
