Lathyrus niger

A perennial in the pea family with divided leaflets and bunches of pea flowers on branched stems to 40cm tall. The purplish-red flowers come out in May to June and are followed by black seedpods. The common name Black Pea refers to the foliage which turns black as it dies back in winter.

This plant grows in most soil types in full sun.
