Here's the first information released by Volkswagen on the all-new, fifth-generation Golf, which will be unveiled at September's Frankfurt auto show. General

Three- and five-door body styles.
Six airbags, five head restraints, lap-and-shoulder seat belts, a new type of safety steering column, and a pedal assembly that yields to minimize the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
Optional Climatronic automatic air conditioning.
Optional four-way electric lumbar support.

Body

Wider by almost an inch.
Taller by 1.5 inches.
Longer by 2.2 inches.
Rear-seat area now has 2.5 inches more legroom and almost an inch more headroom.
Bodyshell's static rigidity value is 80 percent higher than predecessor.

Front strut suspension.

Powertrains (European spec)

2.0-liter four-cylinder TDI: 103 and 138 hp.
1.6-liter four-cylinder FSI (direct injection): 74 and 114 hp.
All engines comply with EU 4 exhaust emission standard.
Four additional engines will be launched later.
Six-speed manual transmission.
Six-sped automatic transmission.
Optional six-speed direct-shift gearbox (DSG).
