Toyota sports cars don’t get any more iconic than the AE86 and at this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon, the car manufacturer has surprised many by unveiling both electric and hydrogen-powered AE86 conversions.

Starting with the hydrogen model, dubbed the AE86 H2 Concept, it features Toyota’s 4A-GEU 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that has been overhauled to now run on hydrogen stored in two hydrogen tanks from the Mirai.

Toyota hasn’t said how much power the car is pumping out but notes it has undergone a series of other modifications, including the fitment of upgraded Endless brakes and 14-inch Watanabe wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza RE71RS F tires. Bride driver and passenger seats have also been installed.

 Toyota Electrifies Classic AE86 With EV And Hydrogen Restomod Concepts

Then there’s the electric version presented at Tokyo. Dubbed the Toyota AE86 BEV Concept, it features the same battery pack as a Toyota Prius PHEV and rocks the electric motor of a Tundra HEV. The result is an all-electric AE86 that delivers 68.4 kW (91.7 hp) and 140 lb-ft (190 Nm) of torque but despite the electric powertrain, also manages to rock a six-speed manual transmission.

This concept also benefits from various other upgrades. Among these include the fitment of Bilstein shock absorbers, Endless brakes, a Nardi steering wheel, Bride seats, and Watanabe 14-inch wheels.

Toyota doesn’t appear to have any intention of offering existing AE86 owners the option to have their vehicles converted into an EV or a hydrogen-powered sports car and is simply showing what is possible with their two concepts.
