Rubus parviflorus, thimbleberry, is an ecologically important species that occurs in cool, mesic, semi-shaded areas from sea level to ~2,500 m throughout much of California. It has extensive clonal growth and can form dense thickets. It produces a raspberry-type fruit and is an important food source, particularly for birds, as well as ungulates, bears and small mammals.

why species was selected

The distribution of thimbleberry is thought to be driven by the avoidance of aridity and as such it may be particularly susceptible to the effects of climate change. Indigenous peoples consumed thimbleberry fruits and used various plant parts to treat a variety of ailments. Stems were also used in basket making.
