Opened on Aug 7 and tried it various days til Sep 1.
Cork was recessed about 1/4 inch and was covered with mold growth under the capsule....I cleaned it up meticulously and started to extract the cork and it slid in about 3/4 inch. In the next 45 minutes I managed to get the cork out in two pieces. Obviously there had been leak-by but the growth on the outside kept the bottle fairly well sealed. Wine at 1 mm above the shoulder.
Wine was a medium amber yellow and sparkling clear. Nose was simple tropical fruits. Taste varied greatly depending on the temperature of the wine but was dried apricot and pineapple on the front and middle with a heavy bitter lemon zest on the end. Having the wine at room temperature moderated the Zest bitterness as did sweet syrupy desserts. The wine showed some maderization from time to time and other times is showed a sweet nuttiness. The front could be quite smooth and supple with defined fruit flavors and it could be all muddled together.
I look forward to 8 more bottles to see if this tasting is common in the development of all the bottles. My guess is that this wine is beyond its time and likely to be going down hill but only more tasting will tell.
Amber color. The palate is showing more oxidation and "somber" dry sweetness of desiccated fruit than I like in a sweet wine. Past its best days but a good match for some foods.

Christie's Smith Haut Lafitte Dinner (RPM Steak - Chicago IL): Not quite as good as another bottle from the same source opened a few months ago. same wonderful aromas of dried stone fruit, but the palate was less complete and a bitter note on finish was slightly pronounced tonight.

Well stored in my cellar for forty years. Served at 55 degrees. High shoulder fill with nice capsule and cork. The color was medium dark amber. Pronounced apricot nose with a fairly balanced body,i.e. sugar and acid perfect, but the fruit was slightly low. I suspect this wine is slightly beyond it's peak.
