Will Donte Greene ever play for the Celtics?

No.

USA TODAY Sports

Wait, you wanted more on this subject than a simple "no?"  Oh ok, I guess if you insist.

It isn't anything personal against Greene.  I'm sure he's a nice guy and at this point he's probably a better prospect than Fab Melo, but as they say, it isn't personal, it's business.

Unless another date is specified in the deal, even nonguaranteed contracts become fully guaranteed on Jan. 10. So if the Celtics keep Greene past that date, they'd owe him his full $1.027 million. With all that in mind, Boston's options are essentially as follows: 1. Waive Greene prior to the season (cost: $0) 2. Waive him prior to Jan. 10 (cost: the prorated portion of Greene's salary) 3. Keep him past Jan. 10 (cost: full $1.027 million salary)

Unless they make another trade that sheds salary, Greene is gone.

So are we missing out on a talented player that could help our team?  Maybe.  Maybe not.  (Sorry, but I'm recycling this link and quote from another post)

While unlikely, it's possible that Greene could show enough in training camp to stick around as an end-of-the-rotation three/four type behind the likes of Jared Sullinger, Jeff Green, Brandon Bass and Gerald Wallace. He's always been a tantalizing prospect due to his combination of size (6-foot-11) and shooting touch (he shot 37.7 percent from deep in 76 appearances, including 50 starts, for the 2009-10 Sacramento Kings as a 21-year-old), but he's always graded out as a poor rebounder for his size and position, and as an inconsistent defender despite physical tools that would seem to make him an ideal fit to guard multiple positions.

So he's got some talent and he might be useful if we've got cap space and roster spots available.  But Shav had talent and could have helped but we didn't keep him around.  So I'm not holding my breath for the Donte Greene era to last long.
