After a brief absence, Senate, one of the first destinations to draw diners to Over-the-Rhine when it opened in 2009, is making its triumphant return this Friday.

According to owner Dan Wright, the new Senate will occupy a slightly smaller chamber inside Forty Thieves, known for its Middle Eastern dishes, which he is shutting down and reopening elsewhere at a later date. His other Senate location in Blue Ash will remain open.

Meanwhile, Senate favorites such as the Trailer Park Dog, Chicago Dog and the famous truffle fries and poutine will be available through one of two takeout windows, one inside the bar, the other facing Liberty Street. You can then take your food inside the Holiday Spirits lounge to enjoy with a cocktail, glass of wine or beer.

Wright said several Forty Thieves menu items will continue to be available, including the gyro and falafel sandwich.

Wright told me that he missed Senate and that the only reason he and his wife and business partner Lana Wright shut down its original Vine Street location last October was to expand Abigail Street, which they also own. “We loved Forty Thieves,” he said. The Wrights want to reopen the restaurant as more of a fast-casual concept, preferably in the suburbs. While a new location hasn't been announced, Wright said he has several irons in the fire and promises an announcement soon.
