Hyde park resident claims R1.7-million from ADT

HYDE PARK - IOL News has reported that a resident of Hyde Park, and former Sappi chief executive, Eugene van As, is claiming R1.7-million from ADT Security.

Van As has taken the security company to court regarding events that took place in January 2012.

He claims that the alarm system installed and maintained by ADT at the time was not working, and as a result, criminals were able to break into his house and rob him of R1.1-million worth of valuables.

IOL News stated that Van As is also claiming for medical expenses and trauma counselling he and his staff had to receive as a result of the crime.

The Rosebank Killarney Gazette contacted ADT Security for comment.

The company acknowledged the incident and confirmed that the case was currently being heard in the Pretoria High Court.

A media representative for the company stated, “The case [is currently being defended] and it [is] being managed by their legal team. Since the matter is currently under adjudication, [the company] would prefer to reserve comment until the judge finds in favour of either party.”

In an unrelated incident, Dr Chris Venter, a resident of Houghton, in July last year provided video footage of an ADT patrol vehicle stationed outside his property while it was being burgled.

Watch the video below:

The security patrol vehicle could be seen driving up and down the street prior to the suspects entering the property.

Venter later had difficulty cancelling his contract with the security company despite the video footage.
