Jamshedpur or Tatanagar is the largest and most populous city in Jharkhand and the first planned industrial city in India. It is a popular tourist destination known for its forests, ancient temples and royal palaces. It was founded by Jamsetji Tata, founder of the Tata Group, and was named after him.[12] It was established in 1919. It is the headquarters of the East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand and is the 36th – largest urban agglomeration and 72nd largest city in India by population. It is one of the first Smart Cities in India along with Naya Raipur. Jamshedpur is situated in the southern end of the state of Jharkhand and is bordered by the states of Odisha and West Bengal. The average elevation of the city is 135 metres while the range is from 129 m to 151 m. Total geographical area of Jamshedpur is 224 km square. Jamshedpur is primarily located in a hilly region and is surrounded by the Dalma Hills running from west to east and covered with dense forests. The other smaller hill ranges near the city are Ukam Hill and the Jadugoda-musabani hill range. The city is also a part of the larger Chota Nagpur Plateau region.

Jamshedpur is located at the confluence of the Kharkai and Subarnarekha Rivers. Subarnarekha is the principal river of Jamshedpur, which flows from west to south-eastern part of the territory. Many small rivers, especially the tributaries, join the Subarnarekha river in this area. The Kharkai flows from the south and joins the Subarnarekha river at a place called Domuhani. The two rivers are the major sources of drinking water and groundwater for the city. It is also a major tourist spot in the region. Jamshedpur has many parks around it. Jubilee Park at Sakchi is the largest park in Jamshedpur. It was built by Jamshedji Tata, who was inspired by Vrindavanan Gardens of Mysore.

Culture and Heritage

Singhbhum district or popularly known as the ‘Sonar Singhbhum’, vis. Golden Singhbhum, in the Jamhedpur is quite rich with its minerals as well as cultural heritage. Arid repulsive land of the repudiated villages have stored a unique folk tradition. The valleys of Subernarekha & Kharkai rivers and Dalma hill are inhabited by Proto Austroloid and mixed Dravidian communities from the time immemorial. Inherently the culture of this land consists ancient as well as aboriginal elements. Since the land has not been completely dominated or influenced by any foreign culture, it has maintained its uniqueness and identity of this dignified folk culture which is reflected through its festivals and festivities. Here almost every month or every season has its own kind of festivals and festivities and other significances. Amongst them the main are Sharhul, Chait-Ganjan, Karam, Bandna, and Makar or Tusu Parab. The Sarhul festivals is the worship of the village deity who is supposed to be the protector of the tribes. Unless the deities of their village are pleased on them they can not be safe and prosperous. The festival is very popular for its festive mood. The whole region is highly charged with dance and song, food and drinks. It is celebrated in the spring season when the sprouting Sal gets greener and Sal trees blossoms with its flower called Shalony or Shalai . This is the symbolic flower of Sarhul. The village deities are worshipped with this flower. The Shalai is also a symbol of friendship and brotherhood which the tribal priest distribute in every house of the village. The  Prasad or offering of this festival is known as Hadia or Diang, immensely popular wine made of stale rice. Men & women get absorbed in nature with gay and over whelm with joy.

It is also known as Steel City and Tatanagar or simply Tata. mshedpur is predominantly an industrial city with major emphasis on core and heavy industries. Jamshedpur being the first industrial city of has set benchmarks and trendsetters for the development of other industrial cities like Durgapur, Bokaro, Bhilai etc. It houses some of the biggest companies of India with a majority of them being of Tata Group of companies. It is also the headquarters of a large no. of companies located here. The largest industry/factory in Jamshedpur is that of Tata Steel. It is the largest iron and steel producing plant in India, as well as the oldest. It is situated at the center of the city and occupies approximately 1/5 of the entire city area. It acts as a pivotal center for the industries of the city of Jamshedpur with a large number of them having direct or indirect linkages with it. Tata Motors is the second main and major industry in Jamshedpur. It was setup in Jamshedpur in 1945. It is at Telco Colony. This is the first plant of Tata Motors. The plant covers a major part of Telco Colony. It is one of the largest plants of Tata Motors. This plant is making commercial vehicles. Even though India's first tank was built by Tata Motors in Jamshedpur itself. And it was used in World War - II.Telco Colony is a township by Tata Motors. This place have each and every facilities, as it is one of the most developed areas in Jamshedpur.

Transportation

The Tatanagar Junction on the Chakradharpur railway division of the South Eastern Railway, is the major railhead of Jamshedpur. Other railway stations in the city include Adityapur, Gamharia, Kandra and Govindpur. Jamshedpur is connected to other parts of India through national and state highways. The major highways are: National Highway 33 (NH-33) touches the city and connects it to Mumbai and further joins the NH32, which connects with Kolkata, Delhi NH-2, NH-33 and NH-6 connects it to Kharagpur, Kolkata. National Highway 18 (NH-18) connects Jamshedpur to Dhanbad via Bokaro Tata-Kandra Road connects Jamshedpur to Kandra via Gamahria. Sonari Airport is serving the city at present. It is spread over a 25-acre area in the Sonari area of the city. The airport is primarily used for bringing in chartered planes of TATA group.

Local Cuisine

Sattu powder mixed with spices and onions serves as a popular cuisines of the region. Pua, a food that looks like pancake is another favorite among the local people. It is a sweet dish which is often prepared during festivals. Most of the restaurants are multi-cuisine and are able to satisfy the eating urges of almost kinds of customers.
