June Foray, voice from 'Rocky and Bullwinkle' and other cartoon classics, dies

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- You may not know her name, but June Foray's voice gave life to some of your favorite cartoon characters from the 1960s and 1970s.

The actress died Wednesday a few months short of her 100th birthday, Variety reported.

"With a heavy heart again I want to let you all know that we lost our little June today at 99 years old," her friend, David Nimitz, wrote on Facebook.

Foray is best known as the voice of both Rocky and Natasha on the "The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show," which ran from 1959-64.

She got her start working for Walt Disney, first appearing as a cat in "Cinderella." She went on on to play Cindy Lou in the animated classic, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," Looney Tunes' Witch Hazel and the granny in "Tweety and Sylvester."

Foray remained active in her later years. She reprised her role as Rocky in the 2000 live action movie "The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle" as well as a "Rocky and Bullwinkle" short in 2014. Two years earlier, Foray won an Emmy for her role as Mrs. Cauldron in "The Garfield Show" on Cartoon Network.

Foray was influential in the animation industry as well. She founded the Annie Awards and successfully lobbied the Academy to add an Oscar for best animated feature film.
