Having dressed everyone from Jackie O and Michelle Obama, to Tina Fay and Taylor Swift, she’s one of the most recognizable names in American fashion today and for the last 34 years the Venezuelan-American designer Carolina Herrera has set an impressive standard for sophistication and elegance.

And, of course, this sort of legacy doesn’t go unnoticed. She’s received countless accolades, including the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award and, most recently, the Fashion Icon honor at Vogue Who’s On Next Awards.

Here, Herrera opens up about home life and the classic influences that inform her aesthetic and continue to inspire her.

Your all-time classic? My topaz bangle and the scent of jasmine.

Your current obsession? Netflix.

The work of art that always moves you? The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch.

The most heavily thumbed book on your shelf? Pride and Prejudice. It is a book you can read over and over again!

The last show/exhibit you saw? The Picasso show at the Prado Museum [10 Picassos from the Kunstmuseum Basel]. It was small, but absolutely fantastic!

Your secret talent? To predict the outcome of a situation.

Your Sunday afternoon pleasure? Total relaxation with books and my dogs.

The occasion you’re most looking forward to? My two-week holiday with total privacy at a spa in Austria. It allows a lot of time for me to think!

Home is … where my husband, children and dogs are.
