Marguerites

Marguerites are a great quick and easy snack. It’s always a hit with kids and adults alike. Super simple ingredients and super simple to make.

You may have read the title and wondered what in the world.  Marguerites is a French word meaning daisies.  But these delicious treats have nothing to do with daisies that I can find.

I am not sure if marguerites are a southern treat or a french treat.  I first learned of them from a friend in Texas.  Her heritage is French.  Whichever these are a daisy of a treat!

Marguerites are so simple to make and a little messy to eat.  Kids love them (well almost all of them).  And they are fun.  It’s a little sunshine on a gloomy or bad day.  A great sweet snack with a little protein for a mid afternoon break.

Two of the things I learned to make this summer go into this recipe – marshmallows and peanut butter.  Lucy’s DP says he doesn’t like my homemade peanut butter, but he doesn’t complain when eating these.

And a nice thing about this treat it doesn’t take any fancy gadgets or equipment.  If you have a toaster oven, you can use that.  If you don’t, a broiler will work just fine.

My mom, from South Carolina, made these for us when we were kids in the '70s. She called them Mary Janes.

My Great Aunt used to make these for me and my cousins. She called them "marguerites" but I'd never heard of anyone that knew about them so I thought she had just made it up. The only difference is she would use 3 small marshmallows (maybe that's just what she had on hand) and she would take them out just as they got to the peak of swelling up.

I now make them for my kids....they are wonderful with a little Hershey's syrup drizzle over them. :)

I was excited to see the same name. Also, we have a lot of French background in the family.

What an interesting combination - We have "margarita" cookies here in Peru, but they're are like gingery flavored cookies in the shape of a daisy. I bet the peanut butter and marshmallow would be pretty good on top of one of them, too!
