Reconstructions of historic gardens as has already been realized in Versailles in France, Het Loo Palace in the Netherlands and Hampton Court in Great Britain – The inspired landscape provides a particularly original synthesis that far transcends traditional garden history.

Pierre Bonnechere and Odile De Bruyn explore the cultural dimension of the garden, that magical place where nature and culture meet thanks to the magic of art. Exploring painting, sculpture or architecture, they highlight the close ties that have always existed between these branches of art and the art of gardening. Attention is also paid to two domains whose relationship with garden art is all too often misunderstood: literature and music. Based on an anthology from the most diverse sources (prose poetry hymns inscriptions papyri novels travel stories symphonic poems operas…) dating from all periods of history, the authors highlight countless visual documents that they collected during their years of search: murals reliefs miniatures carpets engravings paintings drawings old photographs… Their goal is: to enable the reader who has thus been introduced into the mental world of each era to grasp the spirit of each civilization through the gardens specific to that civilization and which are as much a faithful reflection as a privileged expression of it. Accordingly, the authors considered it essential to view garden art in a broad historical perspective in order to be able to recognize the influences from earlier periods in more recent gardens – from the Renaissance to the 20th century. For this reason, they also pay attention to periods whose importance for the history of garden art is often underestimated, such as the Egyptian period, Antiquity or the Middle Ages. They also dwell extensively on the garden in the Muslim world, a type that developed on the margins of European culture, but which has the same roots as the Western garden that was influenced by it in many periods of history.
