Corredera Square (Plaza de la Corredera)

Welcome to one of Cordoba’s architectural gems: Corredera Square is one of the most magnificent places in town Cordoba. Covering about 67,000 suqare feet, this rectangular square ranks among the largest sites of this kind in all Andalusia. Moreover and even more importantly, this venue impresses by the absence of Andalusian architecture. Actually, it is the only site in town with Castlilian buildings as they are found in Madrid or Salamanca.

The square’s actual appearance has remained unchanged since the 17th century, when it was designed by architect Antonio Ramós Valdés from Salamanca. Beautiful four-storied arcade buidlings border the square on three of its sides. In contrast, the south side features two older buildings preserved while redesigning Corredera Square - the old city hall which today harbors a market hall and the so-called Casa de Doña Jacinta.

Corredera Square has five access points. The most notable are Arco Alto (Upper Arch) and Arco Bajo (Lower Arch). On the east side of the square, there is Calleja Toril, a narrow passage reminding of the erstwhile use of the square as bullfight arena. This alleyway was used to drive the bulls onto the square.

Today, a number of restaurants and taverns featuring outdoor terraces make Corredera Square a perfect place to recover from sightseeing.

Also, the square’s arcades invite for strolling through small shopping facilities.

Throughout the year Corredera Square serves as an emblematic scene for various cultural events, including the annual Flamenco Night and Carnival festivities.
