Red Astrachan may have tender flesh and a short shelf life, but is a wonderful apple. The flesh is white but usually has some red near the skin. It is crispy, fine, and juicy, a bit tart, and aromatic. The skin is yellow-green with striping and a often blushes red. A mature fruit will have a bluish bloom, but wiping it off will make the fruit shine. Crops should produce most years but the tree is quite biennial in habit. Somewhat subject to scab and is very attractive to the apple maggot fly.
