About the Apple iPod shuffle® 2GB

Ralph Graves
The third generation iPod shuffle is only about the size of two "AAA" batteries, yet it can store over a day and a half of music in its two-gigabyte memory. And it can talk to you. The iPod shuffle's VoiceOver feature uses a computer-generated voice to tell you the title and artist of the song you're listening to.

Simple in-line controller
A compact remote built into the headphone cable operates the iPod shuffle. You can control basic functions such as stop, start, skip and pause, as well as activate the VoiceOver feature.

Change playlists to match your mood
You can create multiple playlists in iTunes and load them onto the player. Activate VoiceOver to select the playlist you want to hear. A convenient button on top of the iPod shuffle lets you listen to your songs in order, or mix things up with random play.

On-the-go convenience
The iPod shuffle comes with a built-in clip, so you can attach it to your belt, shirt pocket, or just about anywhere. And with a rechargeable battery that delivers 10 hours of continuous operation, you're sure to have music wherever you go.

Note: requires free iTunes® 9 software download from www.apple.com

Features

Compact Design: The 2GB iPod shuffle (3rd generation) is very compact and light-weight. It measures 0.695 wide x 1.795" tall (2.405" with headphones) x 0.315" deep and weighs only 0.38 ounces.

Available Colors: The new 2GB iPod shuffle (3rd generation) is available in a blue, black, green, pink, or silver finish with white earbud headphones.

Built-in Clip: The 2GB iPod shuffle (3rd generation) comes ready to wear with its built-in, stainless steel, sturdy clip. You can clip it to your pants or shirt pocket, belt or shirt sleeve.

3.5mm Jack: The 2GB iPod shuffle's 3.5mm jack does double duty as a headphone connector and USB connector. The 2GB shuffle uses a 3.5mm male connector to plug in either the supplied headphones or to connect the iPod shuffle to your computer using the supplied minijack to USB cable.

Headphones with Integrated Controls: The iPod shuffle (3rd generation) comes equipped with earbud-style headphones with 18mm drivers that use Neodymium magnets. The headphones offer a frequency response of 20Hz to 20,000Hz with an impedance load of 32 ohms. The controls of the new iPod shuffle are located on the right earbud cord. With these controls strategically placed in this more convenient location, you can navigate your music (play/pause, next track, previous track, playlist, and volume +/-) and activate the VoiceOver feature without taking your eyes off your run, your ride, or whatever you are doing.

Note: Because the 2GB iPod shuffle's controls are integrated into the supplied earbud headphones, you cannot use other manufacture's headphones with the 3rd generation shuffle. The iPod shuffle does not features a display.

VoiceOver: The iPod shuffle (3rd generation) can provide more control over your playback options by speaking your song titles and artist names, and announcing a menu of playlists for you to choose from. VoiceOver also tells you battery status and other messages. The VoiceOver feature changes the way you browse and navigate your music by telling you what title or artist you are listening to without interrupting your music with a press of the button through the unit's earbud headphones. The VoiceOver feature also allows Playlist playback for the first time on an iPod shuffle since it will announce your Playlists names with press of a button from the integrated wired headphone remote. The VoiceOver features begins with iTunes and its seamless integration with the iPod shuffle. iTunes reads your song information, then uses the new VoiceOver Kit (must be installed initially) to generate the announcements for the songs, artists, and playlists on the iPod shuffle. You will hear different voices depending on what type of computer system you use when you sync your iPod shuffle. If you sync the iPod shuffle with a PC or with a Mac running Mac OS X Tiger, you will hear the English voice included in the VoiceOver Kit. And since Mac OS X Leopard already has an amazing English voice built in, that is the one you will hear when you sync your iPod shuffle with a Mac running Leopard.

Note: The VoiceOver features supports 20 different languages: English, French, Spanish, Chinese (Cantonese), Chinese (Mandarin), Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finish, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish.

Shuffle Switch: The unit's shuffle switch (located by 3.5mm jack) has 3 positions. You can set it to the left, and you music will randomly playback. If you set it to the middle, your songs will play in order. And turn the iPod shuffle off by setting the switch to the right position.

Compatibility: This 2GB iPod shuffle (3rd generation) is compatible with both Macintosh and Windows operating systems. The unit requires free iTunes software downloaded from apple.com. See System Requirements section below for minimum requirements.

Storage Capacity: This iPod shuffle (3rd generation) has a built-in 2GB USB flash drive, capable of storing approximately 500 songs (4-minute song average--recorded in AAC format at 128 kbps). In addition to storing audio, you can use the flash memory to store data files as well.

Skip Protection: Because the iPod shuffle (3rd generation) uses flash memory, playback is completely skip-free.

Audio Formats: The iPod 2GB shuffle (3rd generation) supports the following audio formats: Protected AAC (from iTunes Music Store; M4A, M4B, M4P), HE-AAC, MP3 (8 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, AAC (8 to 320 Kbps), Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4, Audible Enhanced Audio, AAX, and AAX+), Apple Lossless, WAV, AIFF, and Podcasts. When you import music from a CD using iTunes, it is converted to AAC format by default.

Volume Level: The loudness of songs and other audio may vary depending on how the audio was recorded or encoded. You can set iTunes to automatically adjust the volume of songs so they play at the same relative volume level, and you can set iPod shuffle to use those same iTunes volume settings.

Volume Limit: You can set a limit for the volume on iPod shuffle. You can also set a password in iTunes to prevent anyone else from changing this setting.

Power Requirements: The iPod shuffle (3rd generation) has an internal, non-user-replaceable, rechargeable lithium polymer battery. The battery offers up to 10 hours of playback. When the iPod shuffle (3rd generation) is connected to a high-power USB port on your computer using the supplied minijack to USB cable, the battery charges. The iPod shuffle (3rd generation) battery is 80% charged in about 2 hours, and fully charged in about 3 hours.

Battery Status Button/Light: If the battery status light is green when you press the battery status button, the iPod shuffle (3rd generation) has a good charge. If the light is amber, the iPod shuffle (3rd generation) is low on charge, and if it's red, very little charge is left and you should recharge the iPod shuffle (3rd generation) soon. If no light is visible, the battery is out of power and you must recharge the iPod shuffle (3rd generation) to use it.
