Student, 23, dies in freak accident after trapping her head between her car and a payment machine in Columbus parking garage

A university student has been killed after her head became trapped between her car and a paying machine in a parking garage.

23-year-old Victoria Strauss had dropped her credit card and was leaning down to try and pick it up when the accident took place in Columbus, Ohio.

Police said that as Victoria leant down her foot pressed the accelerator, causing the car to jerk forward and hit her head, according to Columbus Dispatch.

A security guard found Victoria still stuck at the exit toll booth yesterday morning and she was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Police were called to the scene at 5.40am yesterday morning after Victoria was found.

In a post on social media, Columbus Ohio Police said: 'While attempting to pay for her parking, she dropped her card. 

'She attempted to retrieve her card by opening her door and leaning out to pick it up. She inadvertently accelerated and collided with the parking kiosk.

'The collision pinned her between her car door and the door frame. Strauss died as a result of her collision with the kiosk and was pronounced at scene. No one else was involved.'

Columbus Ohio police also confirmed that an investigation is ongoing.

CCTV footage reportedly shows the Ohio State University postgraduate reaching out of her vehicle at around 11.30pm on Monday.

After seemingly engaging the accelerator, the car jolts forward and strikes her in the head.

Posting on Facebook, one of Victoria's friends shared a tribute which said: 'Sweet Victoria Strauss, I cannot believe this news. You are such a beautiful, inspiring, amazing soul. Rest easy and fly high angel! 

'I know you’re happy now with your dad again. I want to thank you for being there for me, helping me through my grieving process while you were still going through it too, and for all of your kind words.

'I was looking forward to catching up with you soon like we talked about but God had other plans.

'Keeping you and your family in my prayers. You are so loved and will be missed by so many.'

A second friend also posted a tribute this morning which read: 'My heart hurts writing this, Victoria Strauss. You’ve been apart of some of the most important times of my life. Words can’t begin to explain how much the girls and I will miss you. 

'From enjoying the most glorious times of our lives to some of the toughest moments we’ll ever experience. I thank you for being there for it all. I hope you’re finally reunited with your father.

'Forever fly and fly high angel. Please watch over us and guide us. I love you.'
