Drop and give me Pudsey! Scott Mills is put through his paces in gruelling army training ahead of Children In Need challenge

He is used to sitting behind a desk in a radio studio or rubbing shoulders with the stars at parties.

So Scott Mills was entirely out of his comfort zone as he embarked on a Royal Marine course at the Commando Training Centre in Devon in a challenge for Children In Need, which is set to air on Friday.

The 41-year-old DJ looked like he was struggling as he sported camouflage threads while preparing himself for abseiling down the 400ft tall Blackpool Tower to raise money for the annual BBC charity telethon.

Scott was challenged by Sir Terry Wogan, who has presented every Children In Need since its inauguration 35 years ago, to abseil down the Blackpool landmark to raise money for the cause.

Clearly getting ready for the physically-draining task, he ensured his preparation was serious - in the form of intense military training under the guidance of Physical Training Instructor's Sergeant Lee Douglas and Corporal Marc Bird.

Scott was seen sporting traditional army gear, while adding the playful touch of a pair of Pudsey ears - the teddy bear mascot which is an immediate hallmark of the event.

He was then spied plunging into murky waters while pulling a hilarious grimace - clearly not a fan of the icy climes of the pool.

An unimpressed Scott pulled a face at his instructor as he pulled himself across a rope - all with his adorable Pudsey ears in place.

The most grubby part of Scott's journey was when he was forced to get on his hands and knees to trawl through mud while he was egged on by his supportive instructor.

Last month Sir Terry challenged the radio DJ to face his fear of heights and abseil down the building to fundraise - in the hope of encouraging others to do the same.

He announced on BBC: 'Your mission, should you to choose to accept it, is to abseil down the Blackpool Tower, all 400 feet of it. I am going to send The Royal Marines to assist you in your daring deed.

'Doing this for BBC Children in Need will make you the bravest chap in all of the country and a real Children In Need hero!'

Scott responded: 'I would say I’m really excited to be part of this Children in Need this year, but to be honest, I am ridiculously nervous about what I am taking on. I’ve never done anything like this in my life and am scared of heights - so it really will be a challenge.

'If facing my fear and abseiling the Blackpool Tower inspires even just one person to donate then it will be absolutely worth it….especially when I get to the ground!'

Last year's Children In Need - a TV mainstay since the huge televised event began in 1980 - raised an impressive £32.6m on the night, and £49.1m in total for the year.

The live broadcast on Friday 13 November will be filled with the typical segments, including musical performances, comedy skits and much more.
