Foliage: | alternate, simple, and deciduous obovate with deep sinuses at the middle of the leaf large leaf (often up to 10 inches long) shaped like a base fiddle generally very pubescent underneath |

Fruit: | very large (often 2 inches in diameter or greater), stalked acorn with fringed margin and large cap |
Bark: | dark gray to brown develops ridges and furrows as tree gets older |
