Growth Habits: Solitary at first and then clumping sparingly, cylindrical stems up to 6 inches tall (15 cm), 2 inches in diameter (5 cm); densely woolly crown; thickened tap root; one black central spine (up to 3); 6 to 20 radials.

Watering Needs: Rot prone, needs coarse soil.

Blooming Habits:
Blooms freely in cultivation, the reddish, cream or light yellow flowers are 1.5 inches in diameter (3.5 cm), petals have sometimes purplish tips.

Culture:
Yellow flowers in early summer.
