Rothmannia Globosa
Once called the Tree Gardenia for its intoxicating perfume, Rothmannia globosa is a stunning addition to the garden for its flowers, fragrance and lush evergreen foliage. The exquisite white bell shaped flowers, appearing in spring, are a welcome guest when dining outdoors as the weather warms. In addition, the large, round, leathery green fruits are sweet and juicy, though do become hard and woody when dry. Staining to blue, the juice was traditionally used to heal wounds and burns. Makes a useful understorey shrub under larger canopy trees.
Drought tolerant once established, flowering and performance is improved with seasonal watering. Protect from heavy frosts. Remove spent flowerheads and prune to shape. Regular clipping improves foliage density.
