Actress Shirley Mitchell has died, aged 94.

Mitchell was best known for her role as Marion Strong in the American TV sitcom I Love Lucy.

The actress died of heart failure in her West Hollywood residence on Monday (November 11) and was the last surviving adult member of the series, which started in 1951.

She joined the cast in 1953 in a recurring role spanning two seasons and a total of three episode appearances.

Her character Marion is best known for setting up Lucy (Lucille Ball) and Ricky (Desi Arnaz) on their first date.

Mitchell's other credits include Petticoat Junction and Please Don't Eat the Daisies.

She was married to Oscar-winning composer Jay Livingston, who died in 2001.

Mitchell is survived by her two children Scott and Brooke from her first marriage to Dr Julian Frieden.
