Stanley Vernon of Wellesley was laid to rest on February 11, 2021. Born and raised in Everett MA, Stan received a degree in Physics from Boston College and a Masters in Electrical Engineering from Rutgers University.
Stan worked in Materials Research, investigating processes and materials that would increase solar cell efficiency first at Thomas J Watson Research Center in NY, then at Spire in Bedford, MA, and briefly at Lincoln Labs in Lexington, MA. Upon retirement, Stan volunteered at the Museum of Science where he enjoyed teaching children about solar energy.
The son of the late Helen (Ring) Vernon and Ted Vernon, Stan is survived by his best friend and partner, Beverly Rubin, his devoted cousins (Marilyn Harris, Leslie Barrows, Tracy Harris, Alison Smith-Vaniz and their families), and his adopted extended NJ family (the Rubin, Haimowicz/Small and Hittner families) who loved and admired him. His cherished loyal friends (including Steve Daly, Mary Murray, Gail Walker, Brenda Cuervo and others) were extremely important to him. He is also survived by his sister Ronna L. Vernon of Malden MA.
Stan battled with Multiple Sclerosis and its cruel complications since his diagnosis 32 years ago. His courage and fortitude were inspirational. No matter how difficult life became, he found ways to adapt and move on with a new baseline. His MS men’s group was supportive, and inspiring to him. His positive attitude and eternal optimism despite his severe disability were remarkable. Stan was a smart, kind, caring, generous and patient man with a great sense of humor, a winning smile, and sparkling eyes. He had a love of photography, and before his illness made it impossible, he enjoyed traveling, tennis, skiing and softball.
Stan was grateful to those at Spaulding Hospital, Cambridge who participated in his care and became part of his family during the isolation that came with Covid-19. He was also grateful to the very dedicated nurses and CNAs who cared for him at home.
