Robert Garfield Buckner III was born June 24, 1943 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Robert G. Buckner, Jr. and Rachel D. Hardrick Buckner. He was the oldest child in this strong and loving family. He was fondly known by most as Bobby or Bob.
Bob graduated from Shortridge High School in 1961, before enrolling at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. While at IU he ran track, became a member of Zeta Epsilon Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and in 1966 received his Bachelor of Arts degree. During this time, he also married the late Dr. Larmon McCampbell and to this union two children were born, Larmon Rachel Gervin-Buckner Decatur, Georgia and the late Robert Garfield Buckner IV.
Bob later married Eva Roberts Buckner on May 15th, 1993. For over 30 years, they enjoyed a full and happy life together, traveling and exploring new places and revisiting old ones.
Bob had a special gift for making friends with people of any age, race or religion, especially babies. This is probably why he was so successful in his chosen career of sales. He was known to have said that “he was able to sell anything to anyone “and in fact did. You name it, Bob could sell it!
Bob was a man who loved spending time with his family and extended family. He treasured times spent together for holidays, summer vacations and milestone events in their lives. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren, nieces, nephews and grandnieces as they competed in their sporting events, dance recitals, gymnastic meets, as well as hearing about their academic achievements. He also truly enjoyed his friends at the Wade Walker YMCA in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
Bob was known for his love of cars, especially his Mini Cooper. Bob also loved jazz music, which we often heard playing in the background. He loved to watch old western movies and loved to cook. He once explained that recipes came to him in his sleep. He enjoyed baking Christmas cookies for his grandchildren. Bob had an extraordinary collection of Black Santa Clauses, that he proudly displayed each year at Christmas time.
Bob leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife Eva Roberts Buckner; his daughter, Larmon Rachel Buckner-Gervin; his brother, Stephen L. (Debra) Buckner; his sister, Beverly A. (Rex} Williamson; sisters in law, Janet P. Buckner, Doris Downes, Carolyn Roberts; brother in law, James (Betty) Roberts; grandchildren, Rachel Elizabeth Imani Buckner, Robert Garfield Buckner V, Lauren Campbell Gervin, Avery Leigh Gervin and Jemuel Adams; great granddaughter; Indigo Taylor Buckner and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert G. Buckner, Jr. and Rachel D. Buckner; his son, Robert G. Buckner IV and brother, John W. Buckner.
A memorial service for Robert will be held Saturday, May 13, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Eternal Hills Funeral Home and Cremation, 3594 Stone Mountain Highway, Snellville, GA 30039.
