Ed was born in Anniston, Alabama to John Robert Lumpkin and Virginia Daugherty on July 17, 1936. He attended Hillsborough High School and the University of Tampa. Ed married his sweetheart, Carol Vierday on June 14,1963 at Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Tampa, Florida. He was a veteran and served in the United States Army. He retired from Cargill, Inc. after 42 years where he worked as an Instrument Computer Technician. He was an active member at Mission Hill Church and formerly Lake Carroll Baptist Church for almost 40 years. Ed is preceded in death by his mother Virginia, his father John, and step-father, Dave Garrett.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Carol Lumpkin, his two daughters, Leanne Stark (Rusty), and Christy Erickson (Andy), grandchildren, Jaden Erickson, Analeis Erickson, Micah Erickson, and Caris Erickson. He is also survived by his brother Bob Lumpkin (Earlene) and many nieces and nephews.
Ed loved times together with his family and he loved life. He had a compassionate heart and was always willing and looking for opportunities to serve others. He had a gracious spirit and was the kindest person you would ever meet. He had a great passion for hot rods and racing. As young men, he and his brother built their own 1934 Ford 5-window coup hot rod in their backyard and then later raced it with Art Malone and won many races. He enjoyed his garden, fishing, going to car shows and air shows with his grandsons, beach and lake trips with his family, and trips to the mountains. He loved traveling to see God’s beautiful creation.
Pallbearers will be son-in-laws Andy Erickson, Rusty Stark, brother Bob Lumpkin, and brother-in-laws Bud Vierday, Bobby Vierday and Dev Besselieu.
The family will have a private graveside service.
