Overview
Main identification features
  • elongate,head flattened, eyes on top
  • dark, fin rays barred
  • c: broad, with spiny base
Body long, low, compressed at rear, depressed at front; head broad and flat; snout short; eye small; mouth very oblique, lower jaw projecting; teeth simple, in broad bands; operculum with concealed hook at angle; 1st dorsal fin low, VII spines, slightly filamentous, 2nd dorsal low, 13 rays, last rays longest; pelvics separate, short; tail fin broad, long, bluntly pointed, with short spiny rays on at top and bottom of its base; anal fin like second dorsal in form, 9 rays; pectorals short; scales small, smooth, head with very small scales; all of body scaled.

Dark brown, paler below; covered with fine black dots; dorsals with pale membranes, rays with black bars; tail dusky brown; anal, pelvics and pectorals speckled, pectoral with dark base.

Size: 12.5 cm.

Habitat: soft bottoms.

Depth: 0-5 m.

The tip of Baja and the mouth of the Gulf of California to Colombia.
