  • preopercle serrate, spine(s) at rear corner

STELLIFER

STARDRUMS

Body elongate, more or less compressed; head low and broad, skull cavernous, spongy to touch; mouth moderate, horizontal to oblique; no barbels on chin; preopercle usually with 1 or more bony spines, at least weakly serrated; gill rakers long and slender; deep notch between spiny and soft parts of dorsal fin.

A tropical new world genus of 24 species, which occurs in eastern Pacific and western Atlantic, with 13 members endemic to the eastern Pacific, 11 of them endemic to our region.
