  • head round, no pores, with papillae
  • body with strong narrow bars

LYTHRYPNUS

GOBIES

Head and body compressed, body slender; head profile round, mouth very oblique; head without pores; papillae around mouth, on cheeks and operculum and over eye; front nostril tubular; tongue round to blunt; 5-7 rakers on 1st gill arch; 1st dorsal fin with VI spines, last one separated from others, 2nd dorsal 14-18 rays; pelvics fused into disc; pectoral rays unbranched; scales rough, ~25-35 rows on body, none on head, nape, chest and pectoral base; body with thin obvious bars; tail short, round, with 17 segmented rays; body with thin bars.

A new world tropical to warm temperate genus with about 19 species; 10 species endemic to the eastern Pacific, with 9 of those in shallow water in our region.
