King was CEO of Sainsbury’s for 10 years until 2014. Before joining the supermarket, he was head of the food business at M&S from 2001 until 2004 and previously held roles at Asda, Haagen-Dazs, PepsiCo and Mars.

King is currently vice chairman of Terra Firma and on the public interest body of PwC.

He will join the nomination committee at M&S, which determines the composition of its board.

M&S CEO Steve Rowe said: “As we navigate the challenges ahead it will be enormously helpful to have [King’s] experience, wisdom and insight on the board. Many colleagues remember his time at M&S and will warmly welcome him back.”

Chairman Archie Norman added: “Justin’s appointment completes a very significant reorientation of the board in the last year. He will be a great addition to a strong team.”
