Telogen Effluvium Hair Loss Treatment Birmingham

Telogen effluvium is a form of hair loss that usually happens after stress shock, or a traumatic event. It usually occurs on the top of the scalp.

Disturbances to the normal hair growth cycle can be caused by a number of different triggers. Some of the common are below:

  • Severe stress. Prolonged periods of stress can result in telogen effluvium.

  • Poor nutrition/diet. Hair requires the correct key nutrients including protein, iron, B and D vitamins, and zinc to grow. A shortage of these nutrients may affect hair quality.

  • Sudden weight loss. Weight loss or extreme calorie restriction.

  • Pregnancy and childbirth. During pregnancy, more hair is in the growth phase for longer. Hormonal changes that occur after birth can cause hair to shed. This is called post-partum hair loss.

  • Menopause. Hormonal changes that occur during the menopause may also cause hair loss.

  • Certain drugs. Certain medications and recreational drugs can cause hair loss.

  • Underlying health conditions. These can include autoimmune disease, conditions that affect the thyroid gland, and alopecia areata.

  • Surgery.

  • Toxicity. Contact with toxic chemicals in metal can lead to hair loss.

Treatment for Telogen Effluvium

Telogen effluvium treatment is often related to treating the underlying cause, with the addition of therapeutic modalities.

Treatment options include:

  • boosting nutritional deficiencies through diet and supplementation

  • hair replacement

  • hormone replacement therapy for people experiencing menopause

  • counselling support to manage stress or anxiety

  • Platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy

Individuals should try to avoid too much chemical or heat exposure that could damage hair.

Dietary considerations include the following:

  • Protein enables adequate hair growth. Foods such as meat, eggs, fish, beans, grains, and nuts.

  • Iron deficiency is thought to be a big contributor to hair loss. Making changes to the diet to include iron-rich foods may help with hair loss. These include red meat, liver, dark green leafy vegetables, beans, and lentils.

A recent May 2022 randomised double-blind controlled trial looked to evaluate the safety and efficacy of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the treatment of female patients with chronic telogen effluvium. The results from the clinical study shown that hair pull test, visual analogue scale, and patient satisfaction results showed a statistically significant difference at one and three months after the sessions. Trichoscopy results showed a significant increase in hair density and thickness in the frontal area, temporal area, and the vertex. There was significant difference between the groups with regards to side effects. They concluded that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) may be considered as a promising therapy for patients with chronic telogen effluvium with an excellent safety profile.
