A Family at War
The first time round I was too young to watch. The second time round I was usually working, and so missed yet again this fabulous series. The immediacy of the film, the struggle of the characters to maintain a normal life in an abnormal situation is vividly brought to life in this nearly forgotten masterpiece. The stories are relevant today. Interfering In-Laws, yearning to grow-up and escape the constraints of ones family. Worrying about your children, marriage break-up, all of lives ups and downs played out against the on-slaught of the Luftwaffe, rationing & poverty, and for once not filmed in London. Liverpool, as with many other 'Northern' cities faced attack during the war, and this is how the Ashtons, their friends and family coped. No stiff upper lip middle classes , ... There is a plethora of well-known faces to spot in A Family at War, and the acting is first class. The series shows the down side of life as well as the up, and gives post war generations an idea of how tough life could be for many, and why Britain voted out Churchill and his party in favour of Clement Attlee. Times were changing and people wanted to share in the bounty they were fighting to protect. The series is predictable at times, but neverless than riveting, and with several nasty surprises for the viewer. An historical gem and a television masterpiece. I dare you not to cry from time to time, for after all we're watching how our Grandparents used to live.
