ScanMaker 6000 is decent scanner
I agree with some points from the previous reviewer. The ScanWizard software is clunky, though I never had it quit or fail to run. I have the most current version. Also, the scanner is slow to start (about 30 seconds) while it waits for the bulb to warm up. That's normal for a scanner that doesn't use LEDs like a few of the newer scanners do. Scan quality is quite high for documents and photos, and I used it for this purpose for several years. The 6000 also has a transparency adapter. That was the reason I bought it. I get best results at 3200 and 1600 dpi settings. Other settings have a lot more grain. And by best, I mean fair. If you want to scan slides at really high quality, you'll need either a dedicated slide scanner or a lab. If you have fewer than several hundred slides to scan, ... Decent scanner, but slower than usual, buggy software
I bought this scanner because I have had two previous scanners and they were both Microtek, so I am familiar with them. The only thing I notice that is different between my last scanner (ScanMaker 4900) and this one is that scanning is much slower. It takes several minutes for the scan to even start. Overall, I think the scanner is a pretty good one, but the software that is necessary to run Microtek scanners (ScanWizard) is not very good. I have had varied success with it. With my last scanner, it worked fine. With the 6000, I am having problems with the software quitting on me during the Preview scan process. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any other scanner software that can be used with this scanner, so I am stuck using the buggy ScanWizard. I am going to try to ... Excellent buy ... awesome product!
Works beautifully for scanning my pastel paintings ... pixel density is very high compared to most market units. Despite having to load up a free on-line drivers for Microtek 3400 unit (couldn't locate drivers for this particular unit) I am still able to use the full 6000 pixel scan ... hooray! The rest of the downloaded package is superfluous as I have everything I need on the program page for the unit itself.Works beautifully for scanning my pastel paintings ... pixel density is very high compared to most market units.
