Overview
When you need to carry people, cargo and big toys, you need to look beyond today's crossover SUVs to a more robust full-size, truck-based SUV. The 2023 GMC Yukon XL is one of the biggest and most accommodating, an extended version of the standard Yukon with more third-row seat room, more cargo capacity, and a robust towing limit of 8,000 pounds.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2023 GMC Yukon XL SLE 4dr SUV (5.3L 8cyl 10A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.50 per gallon for regular unleaded in Ohio.

Avg. Large SUV
This year, the Yukon XL adds a new Denali Ultimate trim level that lifts the plush Denali trim to new heights of decadence. Unique exterior trim, 22-inch wheels and upgraded leather are only a few of the special touches that push the Denali Ultimate to a starting price near $100,000. Also contributing to that sum is the Super Cruise semi-automated driving system, which allows for hands-free driving. The system works on roads mapped in a cloud-connected database — typically large divided highways or interstates — and can even change lanes by itself. The slick system first rolled out in Cadillac models and is available in 22 other General Motors models for 2023. Super Cruise comes standard on the Denali Ultimate and is optional for the regular Denali.
GMC positions the Yukon XL as a premium SUV, making it more expensive than its near twin, the Chevrolet Suburban, but less expensive than the related Cadillac Escalade. Choosing between the GMC and Chevy comes down to personal preferences because the two SUVs are nearly identical mechanically. Only the Denali and Denali Ultimate, with upgraded dash designs and leather, plus Super Cruise, stand apart from anything the Suburban can offer. The Ford Expedition Max and Jeep Wagoneer L are also worthy alternatives with higher towing limits than the Yukon XL.
Which Yukon XL does Edmunds recommend?
Assuming you prefer the Yukon XL's extra style and refinement to the equally capable Chevrolet Suburban's lower price, go with the high-luxe Denali trim. Its powerful V8 engine, bold mesh grille, and exclusive dashboard design give it a luxury push over its Chevy counterpart or lower Yukon XL trim levels. The optional Denali Reserve package gets you very close to the new top-trim Denali Ultimate for thousands less. If fuel economy is a priority, consider the optional diesel engine.
GMC Yukon XL models
The 2023 GMC Yukon XL is a full-size SUV that seats seven to nine passengers in three rows depending on the configuration. It's available in SLE, SLT, AT4, Denali and Denali Ultimate trim levels. A 5.3-liter V8 (355 horsepower, 383 lb-ft of torque) is standard on all but the Denali and Denali Unlimited, which get a 6.2-liter V8 (420 hp, 460 lb-ft). The larger V8 is also optional for the AT4 trim.
Additionally, a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine (277 hp, 460 lb-ft) is available at extra cost with the SLE and SLT trims and at a discount with the Denali and Denali Unlimited trims. All engines use a 10-speed automatic transmission to power the Yukon XL's rear wheels. Four-wheel drive is optional across the entire model line except on the AT4 and Denali Ultimate, where it comes standard.

They don’t make them like they used to

2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali 4dr SUV 4WD (6.2L 8cyl 10A)
Although these vehicles are beautiful to look at, they definitely don’t make them like they used to. I didn’t even have it 2 full days and the radio and sound throughout the whole vehicle went out. It wouldn’t work again until I shut the car down for the night and tried again the next day. Hasn’t happened again for a few days, but from what I’ve investigated, it’s prone to happen again. … It’s got a few things that I’m not too happy about. Nothing that’s the end of the world, but definitely annoying when you pay 90k for a vehicle.

It is junk..most electronic stuff does not work..it's a brand new 2023 Yukon xl and I am having issues on day two..lights are poor..transmission is rough..suspension is like my 20 year old truck that I just scrapped..the dealer doesn't give a crap and service department just ignores you saying it shouldn't be like that but can't fix it..call me and I'll tell you all the issues and for … sure you won't spend a 100,000 dollars on an unreliable stupidly engineered vehicle built by a corporation that doesn't care about anything...[contact info removed]
Stay far away from GMC

2023 GMC Yukon XL Denali 4dr SUV (6.2L 8cyl 10A)
My 5 month old Yukon XL Denali suffered catastrophic engine failure over two weeks ago with only 12,000 miles on it. From the mouth of the service manager at GMC, there is an ‘epedemic’ of complete engine failure, just like mine in the 6.2L engine. I need a complete engine replacement which is on back order nationwide. Funny that they have engines to build new Denali’s to sell to … unsuspecting customers, but refused to provide replacement engines to those have all who have already signed on the dotted line. Run away from GMC. Customer service is nonexistent and they, do nothing to help the consumer after purchase.
I love my GMC Yukon XL but not love at first sight

2021 GMC Yukon XL SLT 4dr SUV (5.3L 8cyl 10A)
UPDATE TO MY REVIEW BELOW: I guess this is a vehicle that has to be "broken" in. I'm happy to report that my GWM Yukon XL is "broken" in! The seats are comfortable and the steering wheel has conformed to my grip. My 6 and 8 year old grandbabies can operate the rear entertainment system with no issues. I still wish it would work with an iPhone instead of just an Android phone. I … purchased the floor mats that interlock for the front, middle, and back floors. The front and middle are perfect. The back mat leaves much to be desired. I'm comparing it to my 2015 Suburban and it does not prevail. The Yukon back mat is not rubber even though the GM website and my local dealership says it is. It slides back and sometime the back hatch door will not shut because the mat is in the way. The mat cost over $100 and I was provided with velcro to place on the back on the mat and on the vehicle carpet to keep the mat in place. I did not put the velcro on the mat or on my carpet and I will not do that. The mat that I bought from Chevy for my suburban was, in fact, rubber and did not slip or slide. It stayed in place. In addition, it was only $65. Disappointed in that. GM - you can do better.
The Yukon XL looks nice and drives good. Comfort is an exception - the steering wheel is not padded. It is wrapped in leather but has a protrusion at the top facing the driver that really causes pain when driving - it is extremely hard and uncomfortable. The drivers seat has three seams and is not comfortable. The rear entertainment center is very hard to get working. I have an Iphone and therefore you can't use the Iphone with it unless you purchase a new cord that will work with it. I ended up using an Amazon Fire Stick that works fine now but it took me two days (six hours) to figure out how to operate it and make it come out of the speakers. It shouldn't be this hard.....

GMC Yukon XL vs. Chevrolet Suburban
Aside from styling details and feature packaging, the Chevrolet Suburban and the GMC Yukon XL are the same vehicle. Choosing one over the other comes down to style and value preferences. With the Yukon XL, for example, any paint color other than white costs extra. The Suburban, meanwhile, offers several colors at the base price. Only the Denali and Denali Ultimate trims offer a level of comfort and luxury distinct from the Suburban.
GMC Yukon XL vs. Ford Expedition
Until GMC recently redesigned the Yukon XL, the Expedition Max held the edge in passenger and cargo space. It doesn't any longer, but it's still a compelling package. A turbocharged V6 gives the Ford capable pulling power that can tow up to 9,000 pounds, about 700 pounds more than the GMC. And the Expedition is slightly more fuel-efficient at 19 mpg combined (the GMC is rated at 16 mpg combined with its V8). The Yukon XL, however, has the current advantage in cargo space.
GMC Yukon XL vs. Jeep Wagoneer
The Jeep Wagoneer (and larger Grand Wagoneer) is one of today's newest full-size SUVs. Like the Ford Expedition, the Wagoneer uses a turbocharged V6 and can tow up to 10,000 pounds. (The base model offers a less efficient V8.) The V6 is also more efficient (20 mpg combined) than the GMC's V8. A new extended-length model gives the Jeep fractionally more cargo space and a little more rear seat room. Jeep also treats the Wagoneer like a premium SUV, similar to how GMC does the Yukon XL.
