Three-car accident reminds Airmen to drive safe

ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. --  Two civilians and one servicemember were involved in a three-car accident at 7 a.m. north of the intersection of Lemay and Doolittle Boulevard.

"One of the civilians was transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital and was treated and released," said Master Sgt. Clarence Barry Jr., 28th Security Forces Squadron flight chief.

Based on the security force's accident report the front vehicle stopped to make a left-hand turn into the hospital parking lot; the second vehicle stopped behind the first when it was struck from behind by the third vehicle causing the second vehicle to collide with the first.

Although the cause of the accident is under investigation, this incident serves as a reminder to keep safety in mind at al times.

"Accidents are bound to happen," said Staff Sgt. Travis Padgett, 28th Bomb Wing Ground Safety. "When accidents do happen, it should remind us of the proper safety rules that we often take for granted."

"Speeding and distractions are the main causes of an automobile accident," Sergeant Padgett said.

The posted speed limits on base are set and enforced to help ensure the safety of all folks traveling on Ellsworth, Sergeant Padgett said.

Some distractions that can inhibit a driver's ability to properly control their vehicle are loud music, cell phone usage and other passengers, Sergeant Padgett said. All of these should be avoided while driving to help ensure the safety of all on the road. Loud music and cell phone usage while driving on base are illegal and security forces will pull over drivers not adhering to the rules.

"Above all, drivers need to be aware of their surroundings at all times while behind the wheel," he said.
