Description

The articular (posterior) surface of the patella is the smooth, concave area on the inner aspect of the bone. It consists of a vertical ridge, which divides it into unequal medial and lateral articular facets.

The articular surface of the patella articulates with the distal end of the femur, forming the patellofemoral joint. Overall, the patellofemoral, medial femorotibial, and lateral femorotibial joints collectively form the knee joint.
