Five days after smacking Chris Rock across the face on live TV during the 2022 Oscars broadcast, Will Smith has formally resigned as a member of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. While it will, undoubtedly, not be the final development in a news cycle that has so far included celeb reactions, Twitter threads, reflective essays, extremely differing accounts from press camps and organizations, as well as prime time interviews, it does slot one more puzzle piece into place.

"I have directly responded to the Academy’s disciplinary hearing notice, and I will fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct," Smith said via a statement published by The Hollywood Reporter. "My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable. The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home."

He continues: "I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken. I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film. So, I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate. Change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason."

Smith apologized to Chris Rock on Monday evening in a statement published to social media. (We assume it could not have arrived earlier due to Smith's late night the evening prior, where he could be found celebrating his Best Actor win by lip syncing to "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" at the Vanity Fair After Party.) Jada Pinkett Smith has made a statement of her own, posting an Instagram story that declared she's entering a season of healing. And Chris Rock summed the whole thing up nicely on Wednesday when he said, "Whoa."

As for the conclusion of The Academy's ongoing investigation, more to come.
