Our beautiful old maps show you the world as seen centuries ago, or a place that you know well as it existed before you were born. There is something magical about maps and they all have a story to tell.
This authentic 19th Century map is over 130 years old and was rescued from a disbound volume of The Encyclopaedia Britannica - A Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and General Literature - Ninth Edition - 1886 – Edinburgh: Adam & Charles Black.
The Ninth Edition was often called the "Scholar's Edition" for its high intellectual standards and was published in 25 volumes between 1875 to 1889. The map publisher is W & A.K. Johnston. This firm was one of the major publishing houses of the 19th century, and interestingly one of their major achievements was that of the first physical globe, which won them a number of awards at the Great Exhibition of 1851.
This map is a single sheet, blank on the reverse, and measures approx. 8.5 x 11 inches (21.5 x 27.5 cm), with clean borders for framing. It is not mounted, matted or framed so you are free to display it how you want.
Considering its age, this 1800s map is in excellent condition, on well-preserved paper. The beautiful pastel colors are still bright, and the paper has a lovely satin feel. There is light tonal aging (to be expected from an antique print and only adds to its charm) otherwise it is very clean with no obvious defects to mention.
These fascinating antique maps make unique, original gifts and wonderful additions to your home or office décor.
