See spectacular Greek ruins and ancient structures in Agrigento. This site was the setting for the ancient Greek city of Akragas and was, during its heyday, one of the Mediterranean’s most culturally advanced settlements. Discover temples dating back to the 5th and 6th centuries B.C.
Find locally made handicrafts and souvenirs in the old quarter of Agrigento. The modern city also has shopping complexes selling well-known fashion brands and souvenirs. Visit the Norman Cathedral of Saint Gerlando, an exquisite Roman Catholic church that dates back to the 11th century. This church is regarded for its unique architecture and has been altered and added to a number of times since it was first constructed.
Ride a bus south of the city to the Valley of the Temples, one of Sicily’s most famous historic attractions. Before you enter the ancient site, stop at the Museo Archeologico Regionale di Agrigento, located just north of the temples. The museum is stocked with objects that were unearthed nearby.
The archaeological park is set on a long ridge extending from just south of the town toward the distant sea. Take a guided tour or explore the site independently. The temples here are widely considered to be one of the finest examples of Magna Graecia (Great Greece) art and architecture in the world.
Wander around the eastern zone of the park and look for the 5th-century B.C. Temple of Concordia, one of the best-preserved temples in the valley. Also in the eastern zone is the Temple of Hercules, which was built at the end of the 6th century B.C. and is believed to be the oldest temple in the park.
Back in town, head to Via Atenea in Agrigento’s old quarter to find shops and smaller, family-run restaurants serving traditional Italian food. Many of the upmarket hotels in town offer fine-dining restaurants. Stay in high-end hotels or less expensive self-catered apartments.
