Outline of WANO
1. Name
WANO (World Association of Nuclear Operators)
2. History
WANO was established in May 1989, in the wake of the Chernobyl accident, at the proposal of the late Lord Marshall. Its purpose is to promote nuclear power generation safety, and allow operators around the world to exchange information on control procedures and performance at nuclear power generating facilities.
3. Major Activities
- Information exchange on operating controls and problems
- Conducting peer reviews
- Exhibitions, workshops, seminars, etc.
- Direct exchange of information and technology through exchange visits
- Mutual exchange of successful case studies and operating indicators
- A general meeting is held once every other year at a mutually agreed location (Originally scheduled for September 2001, the Seoul General Assembly meeting was postponed until March 2002 due to the terrorist attacks in the U.S. on September 11, 2001.)
- The 2003 general meeting will be held in Berlin Germany.
