JOE DURRETT DIES; RITES SET TUESDAY
A prominent Monroe businessman, Joe G. Durrett, 77, 0f 515 Hilton Street, Monroe, died at St. Francis Hospital late Sunday after a brief illness. Funeral services will be at 4 pm Tuesday at Grace Episcopal Church of Monroe with the Rev. Bradley Trimble officiating, assisted by the Rev. Paul Gray. Burial will follow in the Riverview Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home of Monroe. He had been an ardent supporter of the new governor since the latter entered politics.

Mr. Durrett, owner and operator of Joe & Bill's Wholesale Furniture Company of Monroe, had been in the furniture business for over 49 years. A native of Arcadia, Mr. Durrett was a veteran of World War I. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church of Monroe.

He held membership in the Lotus Club and the American Legion, and was a charter member of the Bayou DeSaird Country Club. Mr. Durrett also held several national offices in the wholesale manufacturing business.

Long Picks Local Man As Head Of Tensas Basin Levee Board
Joe G. Durrett, prominent Monroe businessman, will be appointed chairman of the
Tensas Basin Levee Board, by Governor Earl K. Long, Mr. Long told The World yesterday. Mr.s Durrett will succeed Arden Smith, of Oak Grove. Mr. Durrett said that he would accept the appointment and was pleased to have an additional opportunity to serve the people of Northeast Louisiana.

Mr. Durrett came to Monroe in 1919, following his service in the First World War. He is a native of Bienville Parish and was a classmate Gov. Long at Louisiana Tech at Ruston in 1913 and 1914.
