Business Executive and Philanthropist. Garry Drummond began working with his father's coal mining company at the age of fifteen. After graduating from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Garry returned to the family business, the Drummond Company. He served in the company in many capacities, later becoming its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in 1973. During his tenure, the company began looking for coal in Colombia, even though the country was at war, establising their first mine in the country in 1995. Drummond also served on the Board of Directors of many organizations including SouthTrust bank, the Alabama Coal Association, the National Mining Association, and the Economic Development Partnership for Alabama. He was appointed to the National Coal Council in 1984. He also served as the Chairman of the Governor's Commission on Affordable Health Care and served on the Executive Board of Directors of the Boy Scouts of America an the Board of Trustees of his alma mater, the University of Alabama. Eugene Honeycutt, Harold Gene Anderson, and Drummond were credited with inventing a specific method for "open pit bench mining", which has been patented since February 5, 2013. At the time of his death, Forbes listed Drummond as the wealthiest individual in Alabama.
