The Kataba is a single-sided saw without a back. Its blade (approx. 0.5 mm) is thicker than that of a Dozuki saw (approx. 0.3 mm). It does not require a stabilizing back so that it can be used for deep and long cuts. We recommend this saw for general-purpose cutting as it is inexpensive while giving you a clean, fast cut. Kataba saws are available with teeth for crosscutting or for ripping. If you need just a single saw that cuts both ways, we recommend the rip saw with fine teeth. The teeth of these saws are laser-hardened, designed for sawing wood and various other wood-based products. Thanks to its removable blade the saw is easily stowed away in a tool box. It is indispensable for workshops or on construction sites. We offer several types: saws with blades 250 and 265 mm long for cabinetmakers and saws with 300 and 330 mm long blades for carpenters. We source these saws with impulse-hardened teeth from Bakuma and Z-Saw.
This is a saw for professional use in a workshop or on a construction site. Primarily designed for crosscutting, it offers excellent performance at this price level. It is easy to separate the blade and handle: just tap the back of the saw on a log or piece of timber. A brilliant saw for small tool bags and fold-out tool boxes. Replacement blades can also be used on Z-saw branded products and on the Japanese saw distributed by the Two Cherries company. With impulse-hardened blade!

With a tooth pitch of just 1.2 mm this is the finest Japanese saw with an interchangeable blade that you can get for deep crosscuts. The cut is particularly fine and precise. The teeth are impulse-hardened for a long service life. The handle made of paulownia wood contributes to the saw’s featherweight of just 100 g. The rattan wrapping is restricted to the front of the handle, largely because the supply of this material tends to be intermittent.

With this saw you are ready for any cut direction regardless of the grain orientation – from ripping to crosscutting and any angle in between. It is equally adept at cutting a board lengthwise or crosswise or sawing a tenon. The saw with the 265 mm blade is significantly cheaper. This is because in Japan this length is the most popular. The resultant higher production volume is reflected in the lower cost. The saw with the 300 mm long blade is mostly used for rougher carpentry work. Tap the back of the blade against a piece of wood to detach the blade from the handle for storage or a blade change. Insert a new blade into the blade holder, then tap it lightly on the short angled edge without teeth at the tip of the blade to hook it securely in position.

The curved tooth line lets you cut even large planks and beams fast and accurately. That is why carpenters prefer this saw for trimming because it leaves them with a finish that is a cut above the rest. Used predominantly for crosscutting!

Despite cutting on the pull stroke, like other Japanese saws, this saw features a pistol grip angled at 90°. This possibly makes it more comfortable to hold for anyone used to Western-style saws. While Japanese saws are usually wider at the tip with the blades angling back toward the grip, this saw features a constant 63 mm wide blade and so feels more like a Western saws when used. The constant blade width also makes this saw ideal for use in the saw guide for mitres and cross cuts; the guide, shown on the left, is made by the same manufacturer. The saw plus the guide is a perfect match for making exact cuts. The teeth are specially hardened for a long, useful blade life. Blade changes are simple and quick. The teeth are made for diagonal as well as cross cuts. The saw will rip reasonably well, but is far slower than a saw especially designed for ripping. Manufactured in Japan by Z-Saw, using the most modern technologies for hand saws.

Why not create your own personal saw based on our selection of handles, and your preferred blades? All these modern design handles feature an aluminium core, covered with soft ABS plastic for a comfortable grip. The pistol grip also has an aluminium core entirely covered with ABS. Choose any Kataba blade from our stock, say 250 mm, 265 mm, or 300 mm long. They are all made by Z-Saw in Japan!
Note 1: All Kataba blades on this page will fit these handles, except the Lifesaw blade no. 313731, which has a different blade mount.
Note 2: Thicker blades will widen the blade mount of these handles. Initially, this will not create a problem but if you want to insert a thinner blade later on, you may need to retighten the mount. This is a straightforward process: rest the handle on a hardwood surface and tap it gently with a wooden mallet to decrease the slot to its original size.
