Polygala myrtifolia is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to South Africa. Polygala myrtifolia blooms from April until the first frost with beautiful purple and white flowers resembling those of sweet peas. The shrub can withstand a temparature of -10 °C but needs some protection during frosts. The leaves are oval in shape and have a dull green color. In the evening the flowers close and then open again at first sunlight. Polygala myrtifolia can grow over 1 meter tall.
Care
The Polygala myrtifolia is a grateful bloomer and very easy to care for. It is a tender shrub and therefore requires winter protection. Place the shrub in a pot, tub or on the patio so the plant can be moved indoors in winter n a light conservatory or greenhouse. For best results, grow Polygala myrtifolia in a large container in full sun, in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. To keep Polygala myrtifolia compact, the plant can be pruned. This can be done in spring or after flowering.
