Chocolate is personal to us. From gathering the best chocolate gifts for special occasions to making the most delicious chocolate recipes, we know what we’re talking about when it comes to this beloved treat. With its smooth, melt-in-your-mouth texture and rich and creamy flavor, it's easy to understand why so many people adore chocolate in all of its forms.

At home, I've got a pretty impressive collection of chocolate bars, each specifically chosen for different moments in my life. There’s my movie-watching chocolate, my breakup chocolate, my driving chocolate, and even chocolate I eat like a protein bar.

To compare notes on our personal favorites, the editors at Food & Wine got together to find the best milk chocolate bars. We rounded up ten popular store-bought brands of milk chocolate and had a panel of editors sample each one, evaluating the flavor, texture, and overall impressions. And, let me tell you, we had opinions. Read on to find out which bars stood out.

Best for Dark Chocolate Lovers

Listen up, dark chocolate bar lovers – this one’s for you. One editor described this bar as “a milk chocolate bar that dark chocolate lovers will savor.” The Hu Simple Milk Bar is perfect for people who tend to like their chocolate a bit more bitter, but it still has a rich, slightly cocoa flavor that's sweetened with coconut sugar. Basically, it's the perfect combination of flavors for those who love an intense and complex chocolate experience but with some added creaminess.

"This bar is really nostalgic! Creamy and indulgent, this bar reminds me of when I was a kid,” gushed one editor. And who could blame them? With its timeless blend of cocoa and milk, this bar has an unmistakable flavor that's been beloved for decades. Our editors agree that it strikes the perfect balance between comforting nostalgia and pure deliciousness.

While any chocolate bar is a giftable chocolate bar, Tony’s Chocolonely has the whimsical vibe of Willy Wonka's chocolate, as one editor noted, making it the perfect present for your favorite chocolate lover. The creamy, smooth milk chocolate made with ethically sourced cocoa melts in your mouth for an overall dreamy experience. And just a heads up, it's a thick one at six ounces.

In a group of people with wildly diverse palates, one thing that we all agreed on is that this is a chocolate bar for people who prioritize sweetness. This bar is made from not only Belgian cocoa but also Belgian milk to create a smooth and melt-in-your-mouth texture. Even with its complex and rich flavors, the note that comes through the most is sweet.

Some folks loved the richness, others were just okay with it, but we all agreed that it had that classic chocolatey taste we all look for in a bar. The creamy texture is like a dream — it has a luscious mouth feel and leaves behind a velvety smooth aftertaste. Made with Swiss milk and cocoa, this bar gets top marks for being the richest milk chocolate bar we’ve tried.

German chocolate company Ritter Sport is family-owned, so it makes sense that all of their chocolate bar varieties are designed to be easily broken into tiny squares and shared. One of the creamier milk chocolate bar options out there, this Alpine milk chocolate bar melts quite well, so it's our go-to pick over other popular brands for making s'mores on camping trips or in our backyards with the fire pit. One editor also noted that they appreciate the brand's commitment to using 100% certified sustainable cocoa.

Ok, we admit this bar from London-based Green & Black's is kind of fancy and might not be available in every grocery store nationwide, but you can find it at Whole Foods and on Amazon. This 34% milk chocolate bar is organic and made with fair trade, non-GMO ingredients. It's about as rich and intense as milk chocolate gets, with an assertive cacao flavor and not as much sweetness. These bars have a crumbly texture, and one editor said it's their go-to chocolate bar for adding extra shavings to chocolate cake.
