NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office investigating incident involving former U.S. Attorney Eddie Jordan, inside criminal court.

The investigation allegedly involves Jordan and his client, an Orleans Parish Prison inmate.

The sheriff's office released the following statement:

Former U.S. Attorney and former Orleans Parish District Attorney Eddie Jordan is a suspect in an OPSO investigation involving contraband apparently intended for an inmate whom he represented at Criminal District Court.

Jordan is now an attorney in private practice. A courtroom deputy observed Jordan handing an envelope to his client and took the appropriate steps to search the envelope before the inmate accessed it.

OPSO investigators arrived on scene and recovered contraband in the form of illegal narcotics.

"This incident highlights the constant efforts made to introduce contraband into our facility even by attorneys.  We commend Deputy Wilbert Charles and Deputy Prisca Christopher's diligent efforts to ensure that this contraband never successfully made it into the hands of an inmate."
