On Sunday, December 3rd, FRCS hosted several Middle School Robotics teams from around Massachusetts for a qualifier!
All four of the FRCS teams to compete on Sunday did an incredible job. Three of the teams have qualified to go to the state championship!
Here are some details from the competition:
8th Grade - Legendary Lions
- Last Robot Standing Award - although not an official award, this award exemplifies just how consistent their robot was! It was a thing of beauty to watch their runs. The Lions beat 32 teams and won 1st place in the unofficial elimination matches.
- Robot Performance Award 3rd Place - This award celebrates a team that scores the most points during the Robot Game. Teams have a chance to compete in five 2.5-minute matches, and their highest score counts. The Lions scored a whopping 300 points! The head referee stopped by to tell me how calm and composed the team was during matches, while so many other teams got flustered. Their hard work during the season and presence of mind at tournaments has earned them this prize.
- Innovation Project Award 3rd Place - This team utilizes diverse resources for their Innovation Project to help them gain a comprehensive understanding of their problem; has a creative, well-researched solution; and effectively communicates their findings to judges and the community. The Lions topic of wanting to grow participation in FLL Robotics at their school resonated with the judges. They talked about how the program grew from 2 teams and 14 students last year to 4 teams and 31 students this year, and laid out plans to grow it even more.
7th Grade - The Rebooters
- Motivate Award - This award celebrates a team that embraces the culture of FIRST LEGO League through team building, team spirit, and displayed enthusiasm.
- The team got a max score of 230 points in the robot game. They felt like the judging session could have gone better but still managed to make an impression on the judges.
6th Grade - Mythical Panthers
- The team got a max score of 205 points in the robot game. This tiny team of four 6th grade students was the only team that had all newbies on the team. They have learned so much throughout the season (while always singing and dancing!) and have gained valuable experience for future competitions.
5th Grade - Lightning Machines
- Champions Award 2nd Place - This award celebrates a team that embodies the FIRST ®LEGO® League Challenge experience by fully embracing the Core Values while achieving excellence and innovation in Robot Performance, Robot Design, and the Innovation Project.
- The team got a max score of 220 points in the robot game, had a very successful judging session and placed 2nd in the overall competition!
