What to see and do in Ängelholm? Ängelholm is a charming little Scanian town with cosy alleys, several interesting museums and close proximity to beautiful sandy beaches. Here are our top tips on what to see and do in Ängelholm!

Ängelholm in Skåne

Ängelholm, formerly spelled Engelholm, enjoyed periods of city privileges in the Middle Ages, but also experienced hard times with wars and fires. The town later became a popular seaside resort and is still a place that can offer a nice holiday feeling. Ängelholm is also known for clay cakes and for companies such as Engelholms Glass and the exclusive car manufacturer Koenigsegg.

We visited Ängelholm this summer, with our motorhome. We had time to see and do a lot in this nice city, but we didn't have time to write. Here is our report!

Ängelholm is located in north-west Skåne, about 20 kilometres north of Helsingborg. The Rönne River flows through the town and empties into Skälderviken.

What can you do in Ängelholm?

So what can you see and do in Ängelholm? There is a lot to discover, we can say. We have collected our best tips here in a list.

1. Stroll in historic Ängelholm

First of all, you can of course stroll around and discover the historic and charming parts of Ängelholm. For example, we found the area around Smedjegatan very nice, with its cobblestone alleys and picturesque houses. You can also visit Stortorget, where on weekdays there is a market square.

2. Shopping on Storgatan

If you want to experience some city life, you can walk along Storgatan in the centre of Ängelholm. There are plenty of shops, but also cafés and restaurants.

3. Take a boat trip with Laxen on the river Rönne.

Laxen is a tourist boat that usually does guided sightseeing tours along the Rönne River, which winds through the whole of Ängelholm and is sometimes called the "Amazon of Skåne". When we were here in the summer of 2021, the tours were cancelled due to the pandemic, but most likely they will return again. The river can of course also be discovered by canoe, or by walking or cycling.

4. Sunbathing and swimming at sea baths

Ängelholm became known as a seaside resort in the 19th century, and Skälderviken with its long sandy beaches is not far away. There are several different bathing areas, such as Klitterhus, Råbocka, Sibirien and Utvälinge.

5. Hang out in Hembygdsparken

Ängelholms Hembygdspark is a natural area where you will also find animal enclosures, a playground, an inn and an ice cream and waffle parlour. The park is very popular and offers a rich programme of concerts, national day celebrations, midsummer celebrations, sing-alongs, children's theatre and more throughout the year. Balloon theatre and other activities.

The park also houses no less than five small museums. The museums are open during the summer and can be visited for a small communal fee.

Technical Museum showcases technical tools, machinery, vintage cars and motorbikes.
School and bank museum shows old teaching materials from the municipality's schools and the development of the savings bank system.
Leather, Hussar and Toy Museum houses memories of the Hussar squadron and the city's leather industries, as well as a toy exhibition.
Luntertunstugan offers a 19th century farmhouse.
Grönvallska farm instead offers a bourgeois home from around 1900.

6. Experience adventure at Upzone Adventure Park

Those looking for a little more adventure and adrenaline can try high-level adventure at Upzone Adventure Park. There are high-altitude courses where you can throw yourself into cable cars, climb nets, walk on wires high up in the air or swing in vines ...

7. Visit Ängelholm Aviation Museum

The Ängelholm Aviation Museum is located in Valhall Park, which is the site of the former F10 air wing. The history goes back to the Second World War, when F10 urgently started in Malmö, and later moved to Ängelholm. The squadron was disbanded in 2002, and two years later the museum was created by a group from the F10 comrades' association.

The museum is a bit charmingly messy and untidy, as it can be when a museum is run by idealists. At the same time, there is a lot to look at here, and the museum is a bit of a goldmine for those interested in old warplanes.

It is interesting to look around among the aircraft and for those who want, there are aircraft simulators, where you can try to fly and land the J35 Draken, SK60 or a Cessna. We were also fascinated by the story of Swedish female aviation pioneer Elsa Andersson, who unfortunately died during a parachute jump in 1922, aged just 24.

8. Learn about trains at the Railway Museum

Another thing you won't want to miss in Ängelholm is a visit to the Railway Museum. This museum is really neat and tells the history of trains and railways. The first steam locomotives in Sweden ran in 1856, but not everyone was in favour of these innovations. In 1848, MP Leonharf Fredrik Rääf hoped that 'Sweden would be involved in such progress as late as possible'.

You can climb aboard old steam locomotives, test how heavy it is to pull mine rails, watch an informative film as the model trains chug by in front, or perhaps take a ride on the miniature train, which in the summer tours the park outside the museum.

You can also take a seat in the museum's moving little cinema, where the benches shake as you follow the steam locomotive around the landscape. We highly recommend this fine, interesting and entertaining museum.

9. Bathing in the House of Water

Vattnets Hus in Ängelholm calls itself the new activity centre of north-western Skåne. The swimming facility is used for everything from play and recreation to training and competition. The adventure section has slides, a wave pool, a current channel and a whirlpool. The building also has a gym, light therapy and a Nordic Hamam Spa. For those who are hungry, there is a bistro, which works with local suppliers and local ingredients.

Where can you live or stay with your campervan?

We parked the motorhome at the Ängelholm association harbour. Here we thought we were excellent on good ground, with electricity and close to the nice marina, where there was also a small restaurant. There are many places and we also thought the price was good (175 SEK / day 2021, if we remember correctly).

Additional places to stay include Råbocka camping, Solhäll family camping and Valhall farm, caravan and camping site.

More things to do in Ängelholm for culture lovers

There is of course even more to see and do in Ängelholm than our suggestions. Here are some more tips for those interested in culture.

Ausås mill is a Dutch-type windmill, built in 1817 and in use until 1950.
Ceramist there are several in Ängelholm, including Åbergs krukmakeri, Gjordkällaren and Sofia Nilsson.
Art walk you can do on your own. A map is available at the Ängelholm Tourist Centre.
Sjöholm's bakery serves stone-oven baked goods, and has been in the same location since 1876 (Storgatan 58).

More things to do in Ängelholm for nature lovers

Do you like nature best? Then here are some more suggestions for things to do in Ängelholm:

Fishing can be done with a fishing licence in the rivers Rönne, Vege and Västerjön.
Kronos forest is a forest area near the sea with several hiking trails, as well as areas for mountain biking.
Lergöksrundan is a 16 km long cycle path, which runs through the city, along the sea and through the Kronos forest.
Canoeing or kayak, or why not SUP, you can do in the Rönne river.
Trolleys is a steep ravine that offers exciting hiking, like memories of the Snapphanes.

More to do in Ängelholm with children

Here are some more tips for things to do in Ängelholm with children or teenagers.

The King's Building Adventure park offers activities such as summer tobogganing, zipline, climbing, cycling and bungy rocket. (Kungsbygget 44, Våxtorp)
The puddle train goes to and from Vattnets Hus and Hembygdsparken.
Pytteskogen is a small forest north of Hembygdsparken, where you can visit Trollmor, play or play outdoor games.
Rönneviks bangolf is adjacent to Hembygsparken, and is open in the summer.
The UFO monument is a memorial to an alleged landing of a spacecraft in the Siberian forest on 18 May 1946.

More to see and do in the neighbourhood

Based in Ängelholm, we can recommend visits to both the Kulla Peninsula and the Bjäre Peninsula. On the Kulla Peninsula you can experience the Kullaberg nature reserve and sites that Höganäs, Kullaberg or Arild's vineyard, Krapperup Castle, Mölle and the artwork Nimis. On the Bjäre Peninsula we can recommend Hovs Hallar, Torekov, Norrviken Gardens, Båstad and Birgit Nilsson Museum.

Landscape: Skåne
County: Skåne County
Municipalities: Ängelholm municipality and Båstad municipality

Name: Ängelholm or earlier spelling Engelholm. The name is believed to come from "ængil" (meaning narrow or angle) and to refer to a bend in the Rönne river.
Population: More than 43 000 in the municipality (2021)

History in Ängelholm

1516: On 16 October this year, King Christian II issued town privileges for Engelholm. The inhabitants of the medieval town of Luntertun were invited to move to the new town.
1547: Ängelholm had ceased to be a town and its inhabitants were ordered to move to Landskrona.
1565: The building was burned by the Swede Klas Kristersson Horn during the Nordic Seven Years' War.

17th to 18th century

1644: The Swede Gustaf Horn lay with his army at Ängelholm.
1657: Swedish Per Brahe and Danish Axel Urup clashed with their troops at the Battle of Ängelholm.
1678: The Danish troops burned the settlement during the Scanian War.
1705: Ängelholm was hit by a fire and half of its buildings burned down. Further fires raged later in the century.
1767: Ängelholm regained its city rights, but remained a small town.

19th century to present

1802: A fire raged and 35 houses burned down, including along Storgatan.
19th century: Pine forests were planted along the sandy heaths towards the sea, creating the Kronos Forest. The city grew during industrialisation.
Mid-19th century: A harbour was built at the mouth of the river Rönne.
Late 19th century: Tourism took off and Ängelholm developed into a seaside resort.
The Second World War: At the end of the Second World War, the Scanian Air Force moved to Barkåkra and Ängelholm became a garrison town again.
