Dyrön i Bohuslän - härlig skärgårdsö utanför Tjörn

Dyrön, or Stora Dyrön as the island is actually called, is a lovely and scenic archipelago island outside Tjörn in Bohuslän. We took a boat trip here from Rönnäng on Tjörn and experienced a fantastic day, hiking along the Dyröleden trail.

Dyrön in Bohuslän

Dyrön is an island with around 200 residents, but in the summer there are many more than that who come here. Many appreciate the island's varied hiking trails and fine bathing spots, while there are several cosy restaurants and cafés, especially in the summer.

Dyrön is located on the west coast of Bohuslän, north of Marstrand and just south of Tjörn.

You can take a regular boat to Dyrön from either Rörtången on the mainland or from Rönnäng on Tjörn. We were on Tjörn and therefore took the boat from Rönnäng.

There is a small caravan park in Rönnäng, at Stansvikstappen, but there are only a few places, and these were of course occupied when we arrived. Instead, we parked in a car park in Skärhamn overnight and then parked near Stansvikstappen when it was time for the boat trip. From here, it took about 20 minutes to walk to the ferry, and perhaps it would have been possible to park closer.

Then it was time for a wonderful boat trip! You can pay the ticket in a vending machine in advance, but if you come with the breath in your throat, as we did, it is also possible to pay on board.

The island of Åstol

What a lovely boat trip in wonderful summer weather! We first stopped at the island of Åstol, where some people chose to get off. This is a small car-free island with rugged cliffs, charming wooden houses and lots of small boats.

Åstol is an old fishing community, and even today crayfish, crab and lobster are fished here. There is also the fish restaurant Åstols Rökeri as well as a café, shop, local history museum and gallery. Truly an idyll!

Then it was time to arrive at Nordhamnen on Dyrön!

In Nordhamnen there are boats and charming wooden houses. There is also the restaurant Trålverket and a nice bathing area with long piers.

Hiking along the Dyröleden trail

We decided to hike Dyröleden. The trail we walked is marked in yellow and goes around the entire island in a western (Dyrön V) and an eastern (Dyrön Ö) part. There is also a blue marked trail, which runs diagonally across the island from harbour to harbour. We walked in a westerly direction, towards Sydhamnen.

If you walk this trail, don't miss the "Dynes Ravine"! If you not If you want to walk 112 steps, it is possible to pass above the ravine, but seeing the ravine is recommended for those who have the opportunity. A really cool environment! There is also a chance to see wild mouflon sheep in the neighbourhood.

There are several nice viewpoints along the way, offering wonderful views of the sea and the surrounding islands. Here and there are also small information signs telling you about everything from nature to the people who have lived here over the years.

On the way you also pass a small sauna, which can be booked by anyone on the island's website. It looked very nice!

The walk then continues along the waterfront, partly on wooden boardwalks. It is really incredibly nice to hike here!

Eventually we arrived at Sydhamnen on Dyrön. At this small harbour there are a number of houses, as well as a café, kiosk and ICA Dyröboden, which also bakes pizzas.

We chose to have lunch at Linas brygga in Sydhamnen, and we didn't regret it. So cosy environment and so good!

We each had a prawn sandwich, and it got very good marks from us. Plenty of flavourful shrimp! We also ordered an "egg cheese" with blackberry jam, which we shared. Egg cheese is a speciality in Bohuslän, and of course we wanted to try it! Our judgement? Really good! At least the one at Linas brygga!

Hiking back

When we were full and satisfied, it was time to hike back. Now we continued around the island to see the other side, which turned out to be more green and overgrown.

Even along this hike there are great views.

You can look out over boats and canoes.

Along the road is also a really nice little swimming spot, in a bay.

When we finally approached Nordhamnen again, we were a bit tired after five kilometres of hiking in tense terrain, but very satisfied. In the pictures below, you can see a view of Nordhamnen, as well as a so-called "giant pot" (depression formed by flowing water) at the very end of the hike.

We went to queue for the boat home, and when it turned out that we didn't get a seat, we were little worried that we would have to wait a long time. That was not the case. After just two minutes, another boat came to pick up those of us who couldn't get on the first one.

It was a really lovely day on Dyrön! We really liked the hike because it was so varied, and because it fit so perfectly with the shrimp cake stop halfway through.

In the neighbourhood of Dyrön you can of course discover Tjörn, with Skärhamn, Klädesholmen and the Pilane sculpture park. Don't miss charming Marstrand with Carlsten Fortress. It is also not so far to Kungälv with the Bohus Fortress.

Getting to Dyrön

From Rönnäng on Tjörn: Västtrafik route 361 runs from Rönnäng and is served by the ferry MS Hakefjord. The ferry docks at Dyrön, Åstol and Tjörnekalv. Remember to arrive in good time if you have a car and need to park.
From Rörtången on the mainland: Västtrafik route 326 leaves from Rörtången and is operated by Gunnars Båtturer. The ferry docks at Älgön, Lövön, Brattön and Dyrön. The trips are suitable for buses from/to Kungälv and Gothenburg.

Boat prices: There are different types of tickets. We paid around €40/person for a single journey (2022).
Payment of the boat trip: Boat trips can be paid for at vending machines and (at least in some cases) on board. Tickets are also sold by various agents. You can also buy tickets via the "Västtrafik To Go" app.
Food service: Restaurant Trålverket, ICA Dyröboden with pizzeria and lunch of the day, Linas brygga and Kiosk and café in Sydhamnen, which will become a waffle café after the summer.
Accommodation: Houses and apartments on the island can be rented.

Facts about the Dyrö Trail

Length: 5 kilometres around the island (7 kilometres in total including detours).
Time consumption: Approximately 2 hours
Level of difficulty: Difficult according to West Sweden. We did not find it particularly difficult, but it contains mountainous paths, footbridges and stairs. It can also be slippery in some places.
Rest areas: In several places there are rest areas with tables and benches. In both harbours there are eating places and toilets.

What a small cosy gem you have visited in great weather as well, with such nice hiking trails. Now I get the urge to travel to the western side of Sweden.
I don't know what your plans are, but if you are travelling further up Orust, feel free to make a detour to Restaurang Bryggvingen, https://bryggvingen.se/ which is located on Lyr-Äng and can be reached by a regular ferry. Bring your swimwear and enjoy their tasty fish.

In terms of pictures, this post was the best from Bohuslän. This may of course be due to the fact that the weather was absolutely fantastic and then all photos immediately become one hundred per cent better.
